Key characteristics of Digital marketing are that it cannot work without Internet connectivity and whatever be the method it has to be content driven.

Offline or traditional marketing mainly uses mediums like print media, television, radio, networking via conferences & seminars, etc. It does not come for cheap, needs extensive planning and resources.
In Digital marketing overheads are less comparatively and there are various options available depending on the need of the marketer. Strategy and budget can be tweaked easily, results can be measured accurately with various free and paid tools and customer support can be handled more efficiently.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization comes first in the list, there is SEM (Search Engine Marketing), SMO (Social Media Optimization), SMM (Social Media Marketing), SEA (Search Engine Advertisement), PPC (Pay Per Click). These methods are still evolving and new ones are added quite frequently.
