DO’s & DONT’s OF TWITTER MARKETING

“TWITTER”… one of the most talked about Social Networks in post Web 2.0 and pre Web 3.0 era. What it’s about? How it works? Well here is a very simple definition by Wikipedia: Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access.”

Twitter was found in 2006 and by March 2010 it has grown to 1500 percent in terms of number of registered users and Twitter staff grown 500 percent. Now that’s something which can be called as phenomenal!!

But I’m not here to talk about Twitter statistics (for that you can simply visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter) rather to talk how we all can use the advantange Twitter’s growth and statistic to our own advantange.

Twitter marketing is relatively simple in compared to other Social Networks and you don’t have to do a lot of activities for promotion; but there are some simple straight forward do’s and don’t you should be aware of … and here they go:

DO’s

  • Optimize your profile by uploading your photo, relevant information, contact details so that people has a clear idea about you
  • Make sure you tweet at least 2-3 times everyday
  • Make sure you provide quality content with your twitter sales links.
  • Follow people relevant to your niche.
Usually, when we first create our profile, we tend to follow everyone, we could find but the problem is how many actually follow us back. Here comes the importance of following people of your target market. E.g. those interested in getting motivational tips will not be interested about web design service even if they follow them.  So, search people on your relevant niche using http://search.twitter.com so that you can maximize on twitter.
  • Retweet aka RT is an easy way to get noticed as people love to see their tweets retweeted
  • Celebrate FOLLOW FRIDAY –  Tweet the names of Twitter users you’d like others to follow and tag it with #followfriday and/or #FF
  • Tweets on Twitter Trending topic – it is a way to shed light on popular conversations in twitter which will ensure a rise in followers.

DONT’s

  • Do not follow too many people at one time. 80-100 an hour seems fairly safe, with no more than 500 a day.
  • Do not unfollow too many people at one time; keep it to less than 75 per day.
  • Don’t tweet that are irrelevant and completely useless to people. Try to give a personal touch in your tweet.
  • Don’t use any mass follower software to increase your Twitter network as your account might be banned.
  • Do not spam your followers with so much junk that they block you.
  • Finally, you should keep in mind that Twitter is a social networking site, so let others get to know you – let them feel that there is a real person behind that Twitter profile.
